Doug recently told me he intended to write a technical book about the classic clock pendulum... I learned he had designed and built a chamber with controlled environment and a mechanism to move a pendulum, and had carried out original experiments to examine significant remaining questions about pendulum behavior ...his results...include the development of an apparently new empirical relation for low velocity drag. This answered my question about relevance books & textbook
ON THE PENDULUM: mathematics, physics & experiments: Low Reynolds Number drag model; perturbation & numerical methods; virtual mass, circular deviation, buoyancy; build test chamber, launch & control
D. S. DRUMHELLER Doug recently told me he intended to write a technical book about the classic clock pendulum... I learned he had designed and built a chamber with controlled environment and a mechanism to move a pendulum, and had carried out original experiments to examine significant remaining questions about pendulum behavior ...his results...include the development of an apparently new empirical relation for low-velocity drag. This answered my question about relevance; the book provides new data and analytical results on low Reynolds number hydrodynamics, a subject with current importance due to developments in nanotechnology. There is another reason I believe the book will have enduring value. In describing his innovative experiments, thorough analysis of the results, and significant conclusions, Doug presents us with a model of method in applied mechanics. A. Bedford, Professor Emeritus, University of Texas at Austin and author of the textbook, Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics, Pearson.
